From the rugged west coast to the sun-drenched Algarve – during your trip with Portugal Nomads, you'll experience various microclimates. Up north near Ericeira, the Atlantic Ocean brings refreshing temperatures and perfect surf waves. The Seasons in Portugal

Winter – December to March

The winter months are quiet in Portugal. With temperatures between 15-18 degrees, you can still enjoy being outdoors, although you should expect more rain.

Spring – March to June

In spring, Portugal awakens from its winter slumber. May and June are especially magical – just the months when we plan our Portugal Nomads trips. With temperatures between 20-25 degrees and a clear blue sky, you can go anywhere. The ocean is pleasant for a surf session in Ericeira or Arrifana, while the beaches of the Algarve are already perfect for catching the first sun rays.

Nature is in full bloom, and the terraces start to come alive again. Without the summer crowds, you can still enjoy the authentic life in fishing villages like Sesimbra. In the Algarve, you can explore the spectacular cliffs around Carvoeiro at a leisurely pace.

Summer – June to September

July and August bring plenty of sunshine but also crowds. Temperatures often rise above 30 degrees, especially in the Algarve. The west coast offers some refreshment thanks to the Atlantic breeze, but you can still feel the peak season here. Beaches are busier, and popular spots like Lagos see a lot more visitors, so keep that in mind.

Autumn – September to December

September, October, and November transform Portugal into a true paradise for road trippers! The summer heat gives way to pleasant temperatures, and mass tourism pulls back. The seawater is still wonderfully warm from the summer months, perfect for a dip in Ericeira or Lagos.

In the Algarve, you can enjoy an endless Indian summer. The weather is perfect for hiking along the Fisherman’s Trail or the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Below you'll find frequently asked questions about the weather and climate in Portugal.

When is the rainy season in Portugal?

Most of the rain falls from November to February. During our travel periods in May/June and September/October, the chance of rain is minimal, so you can fully enjoy the lovely weather, although a quick shower is never completely ruled out.

How warm does it get on the west coast compared to the Algarve?

On the west coast around Ericeira and Sesimbra, it's usually 3-5 degrees cooler than in the Algarve, thanks to the refreshing Atlantic Ocean. In spring and autumn, this is ideal: it's cool enough for activities on the west coast and warm enough for beach days in Lagos and Carvoeiro!

When are the best surfing conditions?

Portugal has great surfing weather all year round, but September/October are favorites due to the perfect waves and water temperature. May/June also offer top conditions, especially in Ericeira and Arrifana. For beginners, we provide all the surfing gear, including wetsuits!

Isn't the water too cold to swim in during the spring?

In May/June, the ocean is nice and warmed up, making a refreshing dip totally doable! For surfing, you'll wear a wetsuit (which we provide), but in the Algarve, the seawater is often warm enough to stay in for a while.

What kind of clothing do you bring in the spring or fall?

During the day, shorts and t-shirts are perfect, but make sure to bring a sweater, long pants, and possibly a windbreaker for the cooler evenings, especially on the west coast.

Is it warm enough for the beach in May?

Absolutely! In May, it's already around 25 degrees in the Algarve, perfect for both beach days and active adventures.
