Sights of the Algarve: 6 of the most beautiful highlights of Southern Portugal
The Algarve is probably the most surprising region of Portugal. It’s a place where dramatic limestone cliffs alternate with golden beaches, and where you can still find authentic fishing villages that feel frozen in time. Think of the iconic rock formations of Ponta da Piedade, the rugged west coast at Arrifana, or the hidden caves around Benagil. In this blog, we’ll take you along the Algarve’s most beautiful sights: from well-known must-sees to hidden gems that will make your trip truly unforgettable.
The highlights at a glance
- Arrifana – surfing and rugged cliffs
- Lagos – city, culture, and beaches
- Ponta da Piedade – iconic cliffs & natural arches
- Silves – history and Moorish influences
- Seven Hanging Valleys Trail – the ultimate hike
- Benagil and Praia da Marinha – iconic coast
1. Arrifana – surfing and rugged cliffs
Arrifana is a paradise for surfers and hikers. Here, you’ll discover the impressive sights of the Algarve, like steep cliffs and hidden beaches. You can hike a beautiful stretch of the famous Fisherman’s Trail along the cliffs from Arrifana to Praia da Amoreira. During this hike, you'll have an amazing view of the Atlantic Ocean. Stop by the little beach restaurant O’Capitão for a hearty lunch and a refreshing drink. A must-try local dish is the sardines with beetroot tartare and the seafood paella. Thank us later!
2. Lagos – city, culture, and beaches
Lagos is a vibrant city with historic streets and a lively atmosphere. The old town of Lagos is wonderful to stroll through, with charming streets filled with local shops and artisanal products. Be sure to take a coffee break at Pastelaria Gombá and enjoy a typical Portuguese pastry called pastel de nata while soaking in the city's vibe. Besides the old town, you'll also find beautiful beaches where you can relax or take a refreshing dip in the Atlantic Ocean. Our favorite is Praia do Camilo, a hidden beach that you reach via a lovely wooden staircase. Of course, there are many more great spots in Lagos that you really shouldn't miss. You can read about those in our article with tips for Lagos.
3. Ponta da Piedade – iconic cliffs & natural arches
Just outside of Lagos, you'll find Ponta da Piedade, perhaps the most iconic stretch of coastline in the Algarve. The golden cliffs, natural arches, steep staircases, and hidden caves offer postcard-worthy views every few meters. Walk along the cliffs towards the viewpoint at the Farol de Ponta da Piedade, the area's lighthouse, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the rugged coastline and the sea filled with sea caves. For a different perspective, you can take a boat tour along the rocks or even rent a kayak to explore the caves up close. Tip: visit early in the morning or around sunset for the best light and fewer crowds.
Tip from our team
With your trip through Portugal Nomads, you can book a boat tour where you'll not only see the stunning cliffs from the water but also spot dolphins. In past seasons, whales have been regularly spotted, and believe it or not, there was even one occasion when an orca was seen!
4. Silves – history and Moorish influences
5. Benagil and Praia da Marinha – iconic coastline
The Benagil Cave and Praia da Marinha are both located along the stunning central coast of the Algarve, perfectly showcasing why this region is so loved by travelers. The crystal blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean surrounding the cliffs and rock formations create a truly unique view. The Benagil Cave can only be visited by boat or kayak tour, making it an unforgettable experience to see the impressive rock formations up close. Praia da Marinha is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve: perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing among the majestic cliffs and rock formations.
6. Seven Hanging Valleys Trail – the ultimate hike
Would you prefer to actively explore the same impressive coastal area? The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail runs partly along the same cliffs and beaches as Benagil and Praia da Marinha, but offers an extensive hike of about 6 kilometers along seven stunning ravines, including Vale Centeanes and Vale de Carvalho, as well as hidden beaches like Praia do Carvalho. Along the way, you'll walk over dramatic cliffs like Cliff da Marinha, with panoramic views over the azure Atlantic Ocean and the golden coastline. For a break or a hearty lunch, you can stop halfway at Restaurante O Algar, near the beach, where you can taste fresh seafood and local dishes while overlooking the ocean. This hike is perfect for those who want to be active and experience the spectacular nature of the Algarve up close.
Insider tip from our team
Benagil and Praia da Marinha are two of the most famous highlights of the Algarve and are often quite busy, especially when it comes to parking. We recommend parking at the Alfanzina Lighthouse and taking a beautiful hike along the cliffs towards the beaches. Along the way, you'll pass the lesser-known Praia do Carvalho, a small hidden gem that we secretly think is even more enjoyable than Praia da Marinha!
